The importance of glass in architecture

September 18, 20180

Glass has many different uses and properties, making it such a fantastic material to work with due to its dynamism and stability. It has given architects so many new possibilities and designs, meaning there is a special relationship between glass and buildings.

In their search for safety and transparency, architects have been searching for the perfect glass, and due to trial and error it has led them to using reinforced, toughened and laminated glass.

Here are the main reasons why:

Energy conservation

Now we all know that glass is a bad conductor of heat, but good-quality double layered glass can act as a good insulator and can therefore help to conserve energy and lower your electricity bill. Multiple glazing layers, gases and the use of low e-coatings minimises your heat loss.

Noise resistant

Sealed glass panes are the best type of glass to use if you are not wanting much noise, as they transmit very little sound and as a result can be a great noise insulator. Laminated glass has a special acoustic PVB layer. Some of the sound energy can be absorbed by this, reducing the sound level. Double glazed glass also allows you to have better sound insulation as it has vacuum sealed spaces in between each layer of glass which affect sound insulation and produce acoustic stability.

Visibility and light transmission

Glass can be scratch-resistant and provide fantastic visibility. It is additionally able to transmit up to 80% of light available in either direction without any clouding or weathering.

Beauty and visibility

Aesthetically pleasing and extremely versatile, glass comes in so many shapes, sizes and colours. This means limitless design opportunities. When laminated or insulated sheets of glass are combined, they change in colour and appearance, making it so easy to create the bespoke design you want.
